01 — Client Situation

Why the client needed this

The client needed a marketplace payment system where multiple parties could receive payments while the platform managed commissions and transaction tracking. The requirement looked simple initially, but the real challenge was designing a reliable payment lifecycle—not just a checkout button.

02 — Challenge

What made this difficult

  • Connected account onboarding and state management
  • Platform commissions alongside seller payouts
  • Payment status tracking across the full lifecycle
  • Webhook handling with retries and out-of-order events
  • Transaction synchronization between Stripe and the platform database
  • Failure management without leaving money movement ambiguous

03 — Approach

Recommendation and decision making

Instead of treating payments as only checkout functionality, the complete payment architecture was analyzed. Stripe Connect was recommended as the foundation, with the backend owning marketplace business rules, commission logic, and durable transaction records.

  1. Customer Payment
  2. Platform Processing
  3. Connected Account Transfer
  4. Commission Handling
  5. Webhook Updates
  6. Database Records

  • Transaction lifecycle handling from intent through settlement
  • Error handling for failed, delayed, and partial payment states
  • Payment synchronization between Stripe events and platform records

06 — Outcome

What changed

Delivered a scalable marketplace payment foundation designed for reliable production usage—with clearer commission handling, observable transaction state, and a payment lifecycle the operations team could trust.

Client Feedback

What the client said

Broader Engineering Capability

“We initially brought Yatinj in as a Stripe expert, but we were really happy with his knowledge base that we expanded his role to include other areas of our platform development using NextJS and Ionic.”
